The administration of the University of Peshawar (UoP) has launched operation clean-up against illegal boarders affiliated with different political student's wings. There were 300 hostel rooms that have been illegally occupied by certain groups affiliated with different political parties, said a press release issued by the Media Cell of the University Sunday.
It said that the administration is serious in hostel reforms, renovation work and will leave no stone unturned in cleaning up the mess created by illegal occupants residing in the hostels under the aegis of student's union different of different wings. On the contrary, all the students unions under the one or another pretext are foiling the efforts of university administration for providing an ample space for incoming hostel students.
The hostels rooms were illegally occupied by different student's factions including Peoples' Students Federation, Islami Jamiat Talba, Pakhtun Student Federation, Insaf Students Federation and activists of other students' organizations. These student activists are in the habit of maintaining and holding hostels cards to sell it to prospective outsiders and illegal occupants to earn huge money. Due to this trend, hostels remain a big threat to generally peaceful campus environment as there is no data available with security officials.
It's important to mention that varsity is paying nearly Rs 10 million in head of subsidy on electricity bills against whom the university is charging Rs 7,000 per student, while the actual per student cost is seven times higher than that amount.
Apart from these losses, the Provost has embarked on a task to provide generators, additional water tanks, water cooling plants and geysers to keep utilities available to the hostels residing students. Moreover, the renovation work is in full swing especially at I and II and IX hostels. A new Students' and Dining Room is under construction at B-Block Hostel. Recently, the University Provost had made a big recovery from Canteen owners to reinvest it in hostels. The university is charging nearly 24000 rupees annually while the private hostels are charging three times more is testimony to University endeavors for supporting students cause.
The press statement has denied the claims of student that University is closing down hostels and termed it baseless and concocted. It clarified that all the BS(4year) exams are recently been ended on June 30 and the fall semester will start from September, while the Hostel I and II meant for masters' students are open for upcoming master's examinations.
