In the wake of terror threats, over 820,853 security personnel of Pakistan army, Rangers, Frontier Constabulary (FC) and Police have been deployed to guard 85,307 polling stations across the country to avert any untoward incident during general elections to be held today (Wednesday).
Pakistan's border with Afghanistan at Chaman and Kharlachi has been closed because of the general elections. According to security officials, out of 820,853 security personnel, a total of 371,388 army troops and 449,465 civil armed forces including police and FC have been deployed for election duty.
According to an official document, out of 449,465 civil armed forces, 195,086 would be deployed in Punjab, 100,599 in Sindh, 87,269 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 59,497 in Balochistan and 7014 personal of police and FC would be deployed in the federal capital.
The officials said that out of a total of 105.95 million registered voters, 4,299,494 are in Balochistan, 15,316,299 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 60,672,868 in Punjab, 22,391,244 in Sindh, 2,510,150 in FATA and 765,348 are in federal capital.
Out of total 85,307 polling stations, 20,789 have been declared sensitive where the district administrations have installed closed-circuit television camera (CCTV camera), an official told Business Recorder adding that 1,768 sensitive polling stations are in Balochistan, 7,386 in Kyber Pakhunkhwa, 5,686 in Punjab, 5,776 in Sindh and 173 in federal capital.
Over 12,841 police personnel have been deployed at 5,328 polling stations in four districts of Rawalpindi division including Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal. Out of a total of 12,841 law enforcement personnel, 6,132 cops have been deployed in Rawalpindi district and 2,754 in Attock district; 1,841 police officials have been deployed on security duty in Jhelum and nearly 2141 in Chakwal district.
A senior police officer of capital police said that over 7,014 police and FC personnel have been deployed at federal capital's 797 police stations. Federal capital has been divided into four zones, 11 sectors and 21 sub-sectors, he said.
The official said that city police has set up main control room at Safe city headquarters and established three wireless control rooms for monitoring the election process. Over 33 vehicles and 44 motorbikes have been deployed for patrolling across the city. 43 quick response teams have been constituted and deputed in different parts of the city, he said.
He said that about 100 halting points have been established across the capital and a team of five deployed at each point. Official further revealed that leaves of all capital police personnel have been cancelled till the end of July to ensure availability of enough personnel for security and traffic arrangements during elections.
