Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday said his party turned down the entire process of 2018 general elections but emphasized that his party would not only become part of parliamentary process but would also invite other parties to become part of it.
He said this, addressing a press conference at the PPP Media Cell after hours-long party huddle that discussed the strategy to deal with the current situation as the major political parties including PPP are raising serious doubts over the election results.
Before the presser, the meeting co-chaired by Asif Zardari and Bilawal and attended by top party leaders including Sherry Rehman, Faryal Talpur, Qaim Ali Shah, Murad Ali Shah, Rehman Malik and others discussed the post-election situation.
Flanked by PPP leader Farhatullah Babar and others, Bilawal said, it was a difficult choice for the PPP to take decision of rejecting the entire election process as they consider themselves as the saviour of Parliament and democracy in the country but how could they accept such results amid serious reservations. He said in current scenario, they had taken this decision with heavy heart.
Bilawal also demanded of the Election Commission of Pakistan to resign as it failed to perform its duties of conducting a free and fair polls process. He said that 2018 polls was a historic opportunity and there was no need to make the results so controversial and we deem ECP responsible for it. He said he would pursue this matter in the assembly.
"PPP will form a fact-finding mission that will collect proofs of rigging and then present it before the nation," Bilawal said. Answering a question, why PPP absented from opposition parties APC in Islamabad, he said that PPP could not participate because at first they had to take decision over the issue at the party meeting.
"PPP will ask all other parties to become part of parliamentary process and desist from leaving these forums," he said, when informed that the APC had decided not to take oath in new parliament. Bilawal said he knew their grievances were very serious but we would try to engage them in the parliamentary process.
Rejecting reports of PPP joining federal government, Bilawal said, PPP would definitely sit on the opposition benches and he would now show the forcefulness of opposition. "Although PPP has secured more seats as compared to the last general elections, it doesn't mean PPP will endorse such controversial elections," he said, adding that it is for the first time that the his party rejected the entire election process and also called for the resignation of the election commission.
To a query regarding possible nominee for Sindh's chief ministerial slot, he said, the party is in the process of consultation and is yet to decide. He said that after the election process they would further try to improve the party structure in the country.
