The new fishing season is starting Wednesday (today) with the same old problems ahead including poor working conditions for fishermen and use of banned nets to hunt marine species. The country's largest fisheries harbour with $450 million export of seafood during last fiscal year 2017-18 to its credit is unlikely to see any big change to its rundown infrastructure and outlawed fishing practices, fishermen said on Tuesday.
Sindh Trawlers Owners and Fishermen Association (Stofa), Habibullah Khan Niazi said that the country has the potential to double the existing seafood export if the government paid a full attention towards its development with a focus on ending the use of illegal nets especially being employed in creeks.
"The two-month ban should continue without any stoppage since it is the best way to protect marine life especially the shrimp," he said, adding that the just ending two-month ban on fishing is expected to flourish the fishermen economy during the new fiscal year with improved catch.
