The City Traffic Police (CTP) Lahore has finalised a plan to distribute almost 2,000 free-of-cost helmets among commuters in its ongoing traffic awareness campaign. Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Liaqat Ali Malik while distributing free-of-cost helmets among commuters at Liberty Round About on Tuesday told media that the CTP in collaboration with Atlas Honda have started distribution of the helmets in a phased-wise programme.
"Initially, we have planned to distribute over 2,000 helmets which is aimed at realizing the importance of road safety among the people and what damages they and others could sustain in case of violation," he said.
He said it is very unfortunate that the people buy bikes but they do not bother to purchase a helmet for their safety. The rate of deaths due to road accidents is very alarming because most of the people do not wear helmets and they sustain head injuries, added the CTO.
"In last five years, over 6.5 million 'bikes' were registered in Lahore only," he said, adding that many accidents occur due to negligence of bikers. "We can save many precious lives if we start wearing helmets regularly and respect traffic rules," Malik hoped. The helmets protect bikers from dust and noise pollution also, he added.
