France exported more wheat within the European Union than outside the bloc in the 2017/18 season, customs data showed on Tuesday, confirming a difficult export campaign overseas in the face of record Russian shipments.
French exports of soft wheat, excluding durum, to other EU countries in the 2017/18 marketing year that ended on June 30 totalled 9.2 million tonnes, outpacing the 8.1 million tonnes shipped to non-EU destinations, the data showed.
The non-EU export volume was well above the 5 million shipped in 2016/17, when French exports were hit by a very poor harvest, but below initial expectations following a good 2017 crop last summer. Stiff competition from Russia, which posted record wheat exports following its biggest-ever harvest, crimped France's overseas sales, although poor harvests in other EU countries created extra demand for French wheat within the bloc.
