Business Recorder op-ed writer M Ziauddin has raised a very important point in his article carried by the newspaper on August 8. He has argued that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party that won the mandate to govern the country for the next five years had contested the elections on the anti-corruption platform. Therefore, one would expect that PTI government to take steps to do away with this practice for good, starting from this very month.
According to him, "it is the capitalistic system of governance that makes it impossible to curb corruption. In fact democracy and market economy constitute a deadly combination and the unavoidable side-effect of this combination is corruption."
The writer must not lose sight of the fact that the activities of a market economy system operating under the openness of a liberal democratic political system expand beyond national borders. This combination does not necessarily cause the side-effect of corruption; it may lead to intensify competition and encourage dissent in decision-making.
