The Senate Standing Committee on Postal Services has decided to review sale of 133 residential quarters, worth Rs 3 billion, of Pakistan Post in its next meeting. The meeting of the committee was held here at the Parliament Lodges with Senator Khushbakhat Shujat in the chair on Tuesday.
The committee chairperson said that Pakistan Post constructed 192 residential quarters in Karachi in 1948, out of which 133 quarters, worth Rs 3 billion, have been sold. She said that this is a mega corruption case and the committee would review it in its next meeting in Karachi. The committee will get briefings from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other relevant institutions.
About payment of more than Rs 20 million to international cargo company, Lufthansa, without any contract, Director General of Pakistan Postal Services Robina Tayyab informed the committee members that the contract was approved by the Ministry of Law and nothing was done in violation of rules and regulations.
The committee was also informed that it revised the 0.5 percent rate of commission on savings bank services to the Pakistan Post from 1.5 percent on the directives of Public Accounts Committee.
The committee was informed that an incentive scheme for employees of the Pakistan Post on collection of utility bills was discontinued due to audit objections.
The director general Postal Services informed the committee members that private courier services have progressed in Pakistan while the Pakistan Post is lagging behind due to lack of resources and proper monitoring.
