Advisor to Prime Minister on climate change Malik Amin Aslam Khan on Tuesday urged the bricks kiln owners to shift on zig-zag technology as it slows down emission of smokes to curb pollution levels. He stated this while chairing a meeting with the delegation of Bricks Owners Association which called on the advisor to PM on climate change here on Tuesday, said a press release.
Federal Secretary Climate change Khizar Hayat Khan, DG EPA, and other senior officials from the ministry were also present in the meeting.
Malik Amin Aslam Khan shared with the delegates that brick kilns fumes are potential sources of PM2.5 which not only pollute the atmosphere but also create many health hazards, while zig-zag technology slows down emission of smokes through the chimneys at brick kilns, allowing particulates to settle and leading to a drastic reduction in pollution. Once implemented country wide it could help in bringing down the noxious emission from brick kiln.
Bricks Owners Association President Shoaib Niazi apprised the advisor to PM on climate change, "We have shifted many bricks kiln units on zig-zag technology in Khanewal, Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi districts after getting training from Nepali experts and we will request the ministry to arrange a mega scale training sessions for our people for shifting on new technology."
"The investment required for switching over to zig-zag is at least Rs 15-20 lakhs. And currently we are doing it on our own" said one of the brick kiln owners." The delegates informed the minister that they are ready to convert on new technology but they need constant support of the ministry to train their human resource and to make this exercise of conversion, cost effective.
Malik Amin Aslam Khan assured the delegates "We will provide all possible support to the brick kilns." He asked the secretary MOCC to call a meeting of all stakeholders from all provinces, for deliberations and consultations to ensure that the recommendations of SMOG commission are implemented in letter and spirit by all the provinces, including stoppage of crop burning, controlling vehicular pollution and also keeping track of cross border air pollutants.-PR
