The British High Commission in Islamabad Friday said that there is no extradition treaty between Pakistan and the United Kingdom but the government of Pakistan can legally make a request with regard to extradition of former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. Commenting on media reports about Dar, spokesperson for the High Commission stated, "The UK and Pakistan have a productive relationship on justice and accountability. Though we have no extradition treaty with Pakistan, extradition requests can be made legally."
Dar is currently in London and has been skipping hearings of his corruption case for the last year in the Supreme Court and Accountability Court. He has been declared a proclaimed offender by an accountability court due to his failure to appear before the court.
The former finance minister had been summoned to appear before the apex court pertaining to the appointment of Managing Director PTV Atta-ul-Haq Qasmi. He was summoned to record statement regarding the alleged payment of around Rs 270 million to Qasmi during his period at PTV. A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar was informed by attorney general of Pakistan that the Federal Investigation Agency has issued red warrants for Dar after seeking the Interior Ministry's approval.
