Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed the confidence that the government will soon solve problems being faced by the country through its policies. He was talking to a delegation of representatives of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors and Pakistan Broadcasters Association that called on him, here on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister said the government wants to lessen problems of the common man. He said special emphasis is being laid on education, health and social sector. He said the government is in contact with friendly countries to overcome economic problems of Pakistan.
Imran Khan said the government fully believes in freedom of expression and also welcomes constructive criticism. However, he said, the media should demonstrate responsibility. The Prime Minister announced withdrawal of five percent duty on news print. He said the government will support the media industry and solve its problems.
Meanwhile, APNS has expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Imran Khan for exempting 5% import duty on newsprint and instructing the ministry of information to clear the advertising outstanding dues. Hameed Haroon President All Pakistan Newspapers Society and Sarmad Ali, Secretary General in a press statement have thanked the Prime Minister of Pakistan for accepting the request of the APNS to waive off import duty on newsprint to bail out the newspaper industry from the monetary crisis caused by the hike in newsprint prices in the international market. The APNS had apprised the Prime Minister that due to high price of newsprint and the depreciation of Pak Rupee the newspapers are facing an acute financial crunch and many newspapers are at the brink of closure. The prime minister very kindly acceded to the APNS request and announced immediate withdrawal of 5% import duty on newsprint. They also thanked the prime minister for instructing the Ministry of Information for settlement of substantial amount of outstanding dues of the newspapers.
