Tens of thousands of Muslim devotees on Tuesday thronged to M A Jinnah Road to attend the Chehlum of Imam Hussain (AS) and his loyal companions who sacrificed their lives in the soil of Karbala for the noble cause of humanity and justice. A number of small, medium and large size Alam processions were taken out from Nishtar Park and Numaish roundabout as soon as the central Majlis came to an end at Nishtar Park.
The procession culminated peacefully at Hussainian Iranian Imambargah, Kharadar at dusk passing through traditional routes - Mehfil-e-Shah-e-Khurasan, Preedi Street, Bilton Market, Bombay Bazar, Kharadar, and Nawab Muhammad Khanji Road.
The participants offered Zohrain prayers in congregation in front of Imambargah Ali Raza at M A Jinnah Road.
With mournful chants, the devotees including women and children - largely clad in black performed the Chehlum rituals with beating their chests amid loud 'Nohas' and slogans throughout the day.
Law enforcement agencies were put on high alert as police personnel besides Rangers were deployed at the main procession routs and roof-top of the high-rise buildings to avoid any untoward incident.
Besides Alam processions, the Majalis were also held in parts of the Metropolis including Soldier Bazaar, Ancholi, Malir, Korangi, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal on the same day. Scholars enlightened Imam Hussain and his loyal companions' sacrifices in the soil of Karbala and their contribution to Islam.
The police blocked roads proceeding towards the procession route from Guru Mandir (Roundabout). However, alternate arrangements were made for the convenience of traffic approaching the route of procession.
Entry of vehicles and pedestrians to all roads and lanes connecting the route of the procession were completely sealed by placing containers. Earlier, the bomb disposal squad also carried out sweeping of the route of main procession. All encroachments removed from entire route and all shops and markets were sealed.
