History's most successful enterprises sometimes can have the most humble origins, and Hamdard is one of those institutions that have a very modest beginning in India and in Pakistan too. With the passage of time it has developed and progressed to become a renowned social welfare organization. It is now a household name having its presence in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Only a year younger than the country itself Hamdard Pakistan was established in 1948 by Hakim Mohammed Said. In fact the 'parent company - Hamdard Dawakhana' had been set up in 1906 in a small shop in Delhi, India by his parent, Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed - a visionary physician and a herbalist par excellence who introduced a unique and popular brand of Rooh Afza in 1907 in Delhi, India,, which is now present in 35 countries and has won thousands of hearts across the globe.
In Karachi too, it began in a small way: a two-room rented clinic of Tibb-i-Unani (also called Eastern Medicine), where the consultation was always completely free, and one only paid for the medicine - and that too if one could afford it!
Inheriting from his father not only a flair for formulation and good clinical judgment, but also a vocation to serve humanity, a mere five years later, Hakim Said turned Hamdard, when it had gained the status of an institution and industry of herbal medicines and products, into a waqf (an irrevocable Islamic trust) in 1953. Since then its entire profits are being used for charitable and nation-building activities too many to list mainly in the fields of health and education. These range from stipends for poor widows to scholarships for needy students, plus a whole network of free mobile dispensaries. One of its most remarkable projects is the establishment of Madinat-al Hikmah - City of Education, Science, and Culture.
HAMDARD Pakistan, is the leading manufacturer and supplier of FMCG, herbal medicines and healthcare products, engaged over 500 preparations.

In Lahore a facility, equipped with modern machinery is engaged in the production of syrups including Rooh Afza and other Herbal Products. Another well equipped unit factory at Peshawar is manufacturing Rooh Afza, Safi, Suduri and other products by using modern machinery and equipment.
Hamdard has also established a manufacturing unit, the Hamdard Industrial Complex (H.I.C) covering an area of 32 acres at Hakim Mohammed Said Road, Karachi. Its star products - Rooh Afza and Naunehal Gripe Water are being manufactured there to meet their ever-growing demand. The built-up areas of these units are 32,000 sq. ft and 29000 square feet respectively.
Hamdard's products are distributed nationwide through its sales office in Karachi and zonal offices at Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. In addition a network of Hamdard's agencies (Hyderabad, Sargodha, Sukkur, Multan, Faisalabad, Quetta and Rahim Yar Khan) also covers the entire country. Besides the above, private distributors and stockists are thousands in numbers. Thus Hamdard's products are available in all areas of the country.
After the tragic martyrdom of Hakim Mohammed Said on 17th October 1998, the mantle of leadership fell on the unassuming and determined shoulders of his daughter, Mrs Sadia Rashid. She is a lot like her father. She is Chairperson of the Hamdard Pakistan - the manufacturer of Hamdard's medicines and products, thus 'earning' arm of the organization, President of Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, which dispenses the funds, earned by the former on the various philanthropic and nation-building projects of Hamdard, and Chancellor of Hamdard University, the largest private general university in Pakistan, founded by her illustrious father, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said. The University is spread over 350 acres having seven faculties.
Mr. Usama Qureshi is the Managing Director & CEO of Hamdard Pakistan., one of the youngest leaders in the corporate sector with over 18 years of experience in general management, stakeholders' management, marketing and business turnaround. Hakim Said who had worked hard to build up Hamdard from those two rented rooms to an institution with its own factories, offices, and campuses, plus a presence all around Pakistan - and abroad. Now this duo of the next generation has not only kept the legacy going, but ensured the continuity of his work, to transforming Hamdard into a 'Progressive Organization'.
