Police arrested MNA Afzal Khokhar on Tuesday from the premises of the Supreme Court on charges of illegally occupying land of an overseas Pakistani.
The complainant Ali Zafar, presently living in London, alleged in the FIR that he had purchased a land measuring 1.5 kanal some 20 years ago. Later, the MNA grabbed his land when he was out of country and constructed "Khokhars Palace" on it. Zafar said he came to know about the court's proceedings against the Khokhars brothers and filed an application with the police.
Earlier, MNA Afzal Khokhar, MPA Saiful Malook Khokhar, and their third brother Shafi Khokhar appeared before a two-member judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar in connection with a suo moto notice taken against them for grabbing properties of overseas Pakistanis, widows and poor.
In a dialogue with Shafi, the Chief Justice said he knew him since long and the story of his becoming a billionaire. "You were ruling like king as people were afraid of moving courts against you," the CJ told the Khokhars. Shafi said he expected justice from the court.
"Indeed, you will get justice and punishment as well from the same court," said the CJ and observed with anger that the Khokhars grabbed properties of widows and orphans but they were never afraid of Allah. The CJ said that justice will be delivered to poor victims of the Khokhars first.
The CJ observed that the Niaz Beg Scheme was established in 1977 and under what law scattered land of the Khokhars was consolidated in 2014. During the hearing, the legal advisor of Lahore Development Authority told the court that all the officers involved in demolition operation of an illegal commercial market of Khokhars on state land faced suspensions. A police officer told the court that a case had been lodged against Afzal Khokhar for grabbing land of an overseas Pakistani.
