General Manager Descon Technical Institute (DTI) Murtuza Ali said the best way to reduce poverty and unemployment was to equip the men and women with employable skills. While talking to Business Recorder Murtuza said the developed world had achieved phenomenal economic growth by promoting academia-industry linkages and Pakistan would have to adopt the same approach.
He also said it was essential to equip students with technical education to help boost their capabilities, adding it would also help the country to move to the new horizon of development. "Over 60 percent of our population comprises youth while thousands enter the job market annually," said Murtuza. "However, our public and private sectors are incapable of providing them jobs."
He added that to cope with the issue of rising unemployment, government and private sector should focus on fostering entrepreneurship in students that would enable them to become job creators instead of job seekers. He urged the industry to share its problems so that the academia could play a role in addressing them.
He further said that vision of Descon Technical Institute was to enable young men and women from the under privileged sectors of our society to make a decent living. "We want to give them hope, enable them to fulfill their dreams and build their aspirations. Our mission is skills for livelihood. Our aim is to develop the skills that our industry badly needs."
"We have millions of young people, who do not have those skills. We have industry but they are suffering because of lack of skills. So we want to fill bridge that gap. Also we want to enable our people to be able to go and seek the opportunities that are available in the Middle East and in the developed countries," Murtuza said
He stressed on the need of concentrating both on productivity and quality both to be competitive internationally and it can only be possible if our workforce understands the requirements. That is where we are putting a lot of our emphasis.
This model is successful because we have spent a lot of time to build an error free curriculum as per market's demand. We have right faculty to teach and demonstrate the agreed curriculum. The type of facility we have, there is amount of land that we have allocated but most important is the rigger of the program. Our students are kept busy throughout the day. We are teaching soft skills, work ethics, because we are in industry, we know what the industry requires. At DTI he said "our focus is on training and imparting technical skills to our students. But we also try our best to guide students towards any job opportunities that are relevant to their skill sets. For this reason, we have partnered with Rozee.pk to provide job opportunities to our graduates."
DTI offers financial assistance to deserving candidates, especially to under privileged individuals and residents of remote, less-developed areas of the country.
He also said DTI is proud to be a technical trainings partner to a large number of national and multi-national organizations. We have been working with Engro Powergen, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company, Nestle Pakistan, Coca Cola Beverages Limited, Buhler Pakistan.
He said that DTI offer courses in the disciplines of Welding, Fabrication, Carpentry, Civil, AutoCad, PLC, Health, Safety & Environment, Millwright and NEBOSH IGC.
He said DTI had been functional since 1998 and has trained over 25,000 students in more than 14 professional trades. Many of those are working abroad. He said that to ensure the job placements of students, DTI regularly conducts sessions with every class twice in the programme. The purpose of these sessions is to train students to complete the market demands and requirements of employers in blue colour jobs. Job placement cell is facilitating the graduates in finding their dream jobs which will prove them as assets for their relevant industries.
He said that continuing with the aim of providing quality technical trainings, DTI regularly sends its trainers and demonstrators for training in their respective fields. "We believe that best quality trainers can produce good quality trainees."
He also said DTI had fully equipped workshops in its facility. "We have PLC/computer lab, welding workshops, electrical workshops, fabrication workshops and millwright workshops. The aim of these workshops is to provide maximum opportunity to students for practice under experienced demonstrator."
