Punjab Provincial Development Working Party has approved the construction of four (04) sewage treatment plants and required sewerage lines along Rawal Lake, its surroundings and catchments area at the cost of Rs 972 million to keep the drinking water of the reservoir clean from toxic waste contamination.
This toxic solid waste and sewage was being drained into the Rawal lake polluting Rawal Dam - that provides drinking water to the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The scheme was approved in a special meeting of PPDWP of current fiscal year 2018-19, presided over by P&D Board chairman Habib ur Rehman Gillani here on Wednesday.
Officials told Business Recorder that the Punjab government will provide 36 percent cost of the project to keep the drinking water reservoir clean of any such solid waste that has been source of great worry for residents of the two cities.
It may be mentioned that Korang River along with some other small streams coming from Margalla Hills provide water to fill the Rawal dam which covers an area of 8.8 km². Rawal Lake is located within an isolated section of the Village Malpur, Bani Gala and Margalla Hills National Park.
