United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, is constantly monitoring the situation between India and Pakistan, his spokesman said on Saturday. To a question whether the UN chief has spoken with the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, Antonio's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, assured that the head of UN has been continuously keeping an eye on the political developments.
He further reiterated that the office of the UN chief is open to both the countries for easing the current standoff. "The secretary general and members of his staff are having been in touch with the parties at various levels. We continually monitor the situation and (are) available to the parties," Dujarric said while talking to reporters in New York.
United Nations Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet on March 7 berated India for its "divisive policies" which have extensively marginalised Muslims and other minorities in the country.
"India's narrow political agendas are marginalising Muslims and other minorities in an already unequal society," she said in her annual report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
She further said in the report, "We are receiving reports that indicate increasing harassment and targeting of minorities - in particular, Muslims and people from historically disadvantaged and marginalised groups, such as Dalits and Adivasis."
Bachelet shared her concerns over the ongoing tensions in Indian-occupied Kashmir and offered her office to investigate the situation on ground.
