At least 50 children allegedly felt faint after anti-polio drops were administered to them in Mashokhel area in Badabher, outskirts of Peshawar here on Monday. Local residents staged a demonstration outside the district headquarter hospital (DHQ) in Badabher and damaged the property.
According to details, the enraged locals in Peshawar's Budhbir area broke down the main gate and set fire at the DHQ hospital in Peshawar. On the other hand, the victims were immediately shifted to the hospital for medical treatment while the reason behind worsening of their health will also be identified.
Hayatabad Medical Complex spokesperson said the children are stable and that they complained of dizziness.
According to sources, the children fainted of allegedly reaction to vaccines during an immunization campaign in Peshawar.
The affected children were immediately shifted to Mashokhel Hospital and Hayatabad Medical Complex Hospital where their conditions were stated to be stable and out of any risk.
KP chief minister has taken notice of the incident and directed to launch investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Coordinator Emergency Operations Center Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Capt Kamran Afridi (retd), EOC Coordinator has said that anti-polio vaccine is the safest vaccine that has prevented millions of children from disabilities and categorically denied news circulating on media linking children's sickness with vaccine.
In an official statement issued here on Monday by provincial head of the polio programme, Coordinator EOC said that polio vaccine is administered to millions of children in every polio campaign in the country without any adverse effects reports.
The lots of the vaccine have been checked by the health experts and are found safe and effective, he said, adding that the vaccine lots have been swapped and used in other areas are found effective with no adverse effects.
He reiterated that anti-polio vaccine OPV is safe and effective against polio virus and is being used by all Muslim countries of the world.
Some media reports are wrongly associating OPV with children sickness, he said adding that doctors are ready to respond to any emergency.
He requested media to avoid any sort of speculations before the real cause of the children's health is determined by medical experts, during emergencies.
He added, "For safe and healthy future every parents and guardians should ensure vaccination of their children with OPV during the campaign."
