In a bid to encourage the music industry in the country, Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO-Pakistan) and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Tuesday pledged to promote and protect artist community. The commitment came during a meeting between Mujeeb Ahmed Khan, Chairman IPO-Pakistan and Chairman PEMRA Saleem Baig. The meeting was also attended by Meesaq Arif, Executive Director IPO-Pakistan and Director General (Operations), and General Manager (Operations) of PEMRA.
It was agreed that all-out efforts would be made to promote music industry and facilitate artist community for their creative work. Due to non-payment of royalty, music industry is suffering which needs an urgent attention from the concerned quarters.
Mujeeb Ahmed Khan emphasised that since PEMRA is a regulatory authority and all broadcasting channels are under its domain of the licence, it should add Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) compliance to its terms and condition for the welfare and protection of music industry. The chairman PEMRA fully supported the idea and said that PEMRA would ensure protection of IPRs in connection with the music industry and would include explicit terms in the licences issued to the channels and their revival. Both the organisations agreed to promote the establishment and operationalisation of the Collective Management Organisation in the country. The chairman IPO expressed his gratitude to chairman PEMRA for his efforts in this regard and apprised that IPO would soon organise a mega event for creating awareness with respect to music and film industry.
