The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has soared to 9.11 percent on annual basis as it jumps to 245.94 points in May 2019 against 225.40 in May 2018, data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said. According to the PBS CPI inflation related data released here on Monday, the monthly inflation also witnessed an increase of 0.78 percent as it increased from 244.03 points in April 2019 to 245.94 in May 2019.
In May, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) increased by 1.43 percent, while the average inflation rate during the period July-May also jumped up by 7.19 percent as compared to the same period of 2017-18.
On year-on-year (YoY) basis, the items that witnessed increase in price during May 2019 against the same month of last year included gas 85.31 percent, onion 77.52 percent, cabbage 74.87 percent, watermelon 55.73 percent, bus fare 51.16 percent, garlic 49.99 percent, tomatoes 46.11 percent, lemon 43.46 percent, bottlegourd 34.83 percent, pulse moong 33.65 percent, newspaper 33.33 percent, mango 28.99 percent, CNG 28.23 percent, MBA tuition fees 27.73 percent, sugar 26.53 percent, High Speed Diesel 23.86 percent, petrol 23.63 percent, gold Tezabi 20.07 percent, lady finger 15.09 percent, mutton 12.04 percent, pulse gram 11.43 percent, Apple 11.20 percent, bananas 10.82 percent, electricity 8.48 percent, wheat 7.40 percent, dates 7.32 percent, and house rent 6.15 percent.
On Monthly basis, prices of the following items witnessed an increase: Lemon 95.30 percent, cabbage 75.23 percent, onion 27.18 percent, potatoes 25.80 percent, bananas 20.91 percent, carrot 15.56 percent, muskmelon 12.43 percent, garlic 10.46 percent, petrol 6.46 percent, apple 9.56 percent, chicken 9.90 percent, pulse Mash (washed) 5.93 percent, pulse 5.46 percent, ice 4.80 percent, kerosene Oil 3.73 percent, sugar 3.43 percent, dates 3.35 percent, toilet (2.23 percent, tailoring 2.19 percent, mutton 1.60 percent and CNG 1.35 percent.
While on MoM basis, prices of the following items witnessed a decline: Tinda 47.88 percent, watermelon 45.27 percent, tomato 32.86 percent, chilly green 17.27 percent, cucumber 9.42 percent, spinach 9.04 percent, cement local 6.79 percent, chicken 5.33 percent, silver 2.68 percent, (2.22 percent, gram (1.92 percent, farm eggs 1.09 percent, wheat 0.85 percent, gram whole black 0.50 percent, cement blocks 0.26 percent, and besan 0.20 percent.
The items that witnessed a reduction in price during May 2019 against the same month of last year included betel nuts 35.55 percent, gram whole 12.76 percent, eggs farm 10.52 percent, and plum 4.79 percent.
In May 2019, trimmed core inflation on yearly basis was increased by 7.5 percent whereas it was 5.1 percent in May 2018 over May 2017. Over the period, non-food and non-energy core inflation has been observed at 7.2 percent whereas it was 7 percent in May, 2018 over May, 2017.
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics collects the retail prices and computes the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for a basket of 487 items collected from 40 cities and 76 markets. For each item four (04) quotations are collected from each market on monthly basis. Wholesale Price Index (WPI), on monthly basis, is compiled from 21 markets and 21 cities for a basket of 463 items. Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) is compiled on weekly basis for 53 items from 53 markets of 17 cities.
