The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is optimistic about thwarting the no-confidence motion against Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani despite lacking the required strength in the House, claiming that some members belonging to opposition would not vote against the chairman. Talking to reporters, Leader of the House in Senate Syed Shibli Faraz said that resignation of the chairman Senate is 'out of question' as he knows that members belonging to opposition parties would vote as per their "conscience."
He elaborated that a vote as per one's conscience means 'the member will use his/her vote after taking stock of the situation,' as removal of the chairman without any reason would 'weaken' the institution of Senate, which is the symbol of the federation.
He said that the Upper House of Parliament has the equal representation from all the provinces, adding that "any attempt like what the opposition is into, would certainly increase the sense of deprivation among smaller provinces, besides damaging the reputation of the institution."
He said although the opposition has a majority in the House, lawmakers in a good number would draw a comparison between Sanjrani and joint opposition's candidate Hasil Bizenjo. "I am sure all the members will vote for Sanjrani on the call of their conscience," he added.
PTI Chief Whip Sajjad Toori said that the opposition has no option but to 'kiss the dust' as whatever they are doing is petty politics which is quite harmful for teething democracy. "Their [opposition's] rhetoric of sacrificing for democracy stands exposed through their efforts to replace the chairman Senate," he said.
