The government''s housing project for the low-income group would help move the wheel of the economy as 40 industries are directly linked to housing sector, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Wednesday. While speaking after signing a memorandum of understanding for Naya Pakistan Housing Programme, between the government of Pakistan and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Sustainable Housing Solution (SHS), the prime minister said UNOPS decision to construct 0.5 million housing units is a land mark project as it entails considerable financing for the projects.
Imran khan said the government does not have financing to achieve ambitious target of constructing 5 million houses and financing by the UNOPS will provide an opportunity to start the project at a fast pace by involving local labour and material.
He said 40 industries are directly connected with the housing sector and one of the best things that could happen to Pakistan is that it will move the wheel of the economy. The government, he said, would provide an opportunity to low income group and govt employees to have their own houses on easy instalments and low interest rate. The prime minister said this govt''s flagship project is taking time because a comprehensive package is being prepared for the project to ensure loans from banks. The prime minister said this is not an easy project and it is very challenging for the government to bridge the shortage of 12.5 million housing units in the country.
