Punjab Inspector General Police (IGP) Arif Nawaz Khan has said that 1,492 martyrs of Punjab police are proof that officials and officers of this force consider martyrdom an honour. "Martyrdom is a special blessing of almighty Allah, who gives only to selected ones," expressed the IGP while speaking at a rally to mark Police Martyrs Day outside the Alhamra Arts Council here on Sunday.
"At this day, we reiterate our resolve to protect lives, properties and honour of public besides eradicating anti-social elements," he said, adding that near 1500 martyrs of police including DIG Ahmad Mubin, Zahid Mahmood Gondal are a reminder for every official and officer that the police force is not just a service but also a sacred commitment that they will keep till the last drop of their blood with honesty and dutifulness. He said that great nations never forget the sacrifices of their martyrs; Punjab police will also remember the sacrifices of their martyrs who sacrificed their lives without caring for their families and parents increasing the honour and grace of the department.
"Police martyrs are sacred assets of our department and to look after their families is among my top priority," he asserted, adding that steps will be taken continuously by utilizing all available resources in this regard.
Similar events in all district police lines were also held in which families of the martyrs from every districts participated as chief guests and senior officers of their respective districts visited graves of martyrs, offered Fateha and laid floral wreaths.
The IGP also laid floral wreath at Martyrs Monument in Qila Gujar Singh Police Lines and offered Fateha. Lahore CCPO BA Nasir, DIG Operations Ashfaq Ahmad Khan, DIG Investigation Inam Waheed and other senior officers were also present.
Later, a seminar was held at the Alhamra Arts Council to mark the Martyrs Day. In the event families of police martyrs, Governor Punjab Ch Muhammad Sarwar, Cabinet Committee and Law & Order member Colonel Hashim, Provincial Health Minister Dr Yasmeen Rehman, senior journalists, police officers, religious scholars, lawyers, teachers and civil society activists also participated.
During the event, children of martyrs presented national songs and delivered speeches while Fateha was also offered for the martyrs. Meanwhile, the IG met the families of martyrs and heard their problems and distributed special gifts among the children.
In his opening address, Capital City Police Officer BA Nasir paid rich tributes to the martyrs and reiterated their resolve to continuing the mission of the fallen heroes.
Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar and cabinet committee law and order member Colonel Hashim Dogar said that police have always played a pivotal role in maintaining law and order in society and their efforts to combat terrorism are appreciable. The entire Punjab Cabinet is standing side by side with police force in addressing the issues of martyrs' families, they added. Dogar said that all possible steps will be taken to provide housing, education and health facilities the survivors of police officials.
Chief Secretary Punjab Yousaf Naseem Khokhar said that the nations who remember their martyrs always excel and events like Martyrs Day should be part of the national calendar and martyr package / privileges will be further increased upon stability in the economy.
