Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday again issued notices to Mayor Karachi, Secretary Local Government and others in a petition related to swarms of flies and heaps of garbage in the city. Mayor Karachi, Secretary Local Sindh and Chairmen of District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) didn't appear in the hearing of the petition despite the notices served to them in the last hearing when the SHC resumed the hearing on it.
Petitioner Sameer Soomor had moved the SHC at the end of previous month against the abundance of flies in the city and stated that the flies swarming in the city made the lives of citizens miserable. The petitioner also feared about the outbreak of diseases in the city as insecticides have not been sprayed.
He also submitted that offal of sacrificial animals of Eidul Azha are still lying on the streets and roads of the city, which have resulted in multiplying the flies. Sindh Government, Mayor Karachi and DMCs have been made respondents in the petition.
In today's hearing, the SHC bench directed the respondents to submit their replies in the next hearing after ordering to issue notices to Mayor Karachi, Secretary Local Government Sindh and DMCs Chairmen. Meanwhile, the SHC bench commuted the death sentence handed to convict in murder case to life imprisonment. Convict Karim Lashari murdered a person namely Ahmed Ali in 2010.
ATC Court sentenced Lashari to death after he was proven guilty in 2014. The SHC commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment after convict filed appeal in SHC.
