Spoiler alert: Here’s who died in Game of Thrones’ nail-biting Battle of Winterfell
Sunday night's Game of Thrones episode surely exceeded the expectations as the ‘The Long Night’ promised an epic battle and it surely delivered. Being termed as one of the best episodes in GoT’s history, the Battle of Winterfell was an intense fight, but of course not everyone made it out alive.
Armies from across the seven kingdoms joined hands with Winterfell to fight off the Night King and his army of the dead. This was the moment that the past seven seasons had been building up to and after an intense battle, just when we thought the undead have won, the Night King was defeated and killed in a sudden turn of events.
With all eyes on Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen to take done the Night King, it was surprisingly Arya Stark who single-handedly conquered the undead by piercing the dagger into the Night King's heart like a warrior, and that too this being her first ever battle.
Although fans feared losing many of their favorite lead characters, the writers did not kill off that many. The entire Dothraki hordes were the first ones in the battle to get killed by the White Walker merely within seconds after they rode towards the undead army with their flaming swords, thanks to Melisandre's magic and her Lord of Light.
Melisandre - The Red Witch turned up at Winterfell just as the battle was about to begin and was surely of great help for the living side. She announced to an unhappy Ser Davos upon her arrival at Winterfell that she will die before the dawn next morning. Just after the dust had settled after the Great War and Night King’s death, she chose to end her life by removing the mysterious red amulet she always wore around her neck, which was the source of power to keep the actual hundreds of years old Melisandre young and alive.
On the battlefield, from Lyanna Mormont to Jorah Mormont, who sacrificed his life for his Queen Daenerys Targaryen, it was a difficult episode to sail through. Ser Jorah surely died living out his dearest fantasy, protecting his queen and the love of his life, Daenerys Targaryen.
Night’s Watch former commander remained loyal to his brothers even during the intense battle, as he rescued Samwell Tarly from a wight only to become wight seconds later.
Lord Beric Dondarrion also fought alongside Arya and the Hound until the bitter end, ultimately sacrificing himself to rescue Arya from a band of wights.
Theon Greyjoy earned everyone's respect as he faced his death at the hands of Night King, protecting Bran Stark. Theon left us teary-eyed as he paced towards the Night King in an attempt to save Bran.
Dany’s dragon Viserion, who was killed and then revived last season as an undead ice dragon, was also killed for good this episode, after giving the armies a though time at the battle field. The ice dragon was killed, along with the entire army of the undead, the minute Arya’s dagger turned the Night King into shards.
While there were some heartbreaking moments, main characters Dany and Jon were a disappointment through out the episode. The two characters, who fans thought will play a crucial role in the Battle of Winterfell, were only seen away from the battle scene for half the battle.
