LAHORE: A Lahore High Court (LHC) division beech Thursday granted bail to former DPO Gujrat Rai Ejaz in an embezzlement case.

The court directed Rai Ejaz for submission of surety bonds of Rs 500,000.

The division bench comprising Justice Ali Baqar Najafi and Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem passed the orders while allowing a post-arrest bail petition by Rai Ejaz.

At the outset of the proceedings, Rai Ejaz's counsel argued that his client was arrested by the bureau in connection with embezzlement charges during his posting as DPO Gujrat from 2014 to 2016. He submitted that his client had a spotless service career and there was no complaint against him.

He contended that all charges against his client were baseless and the bureau did not have any evidence against him.

He submitted that the investigations had been completed whereas his client had been sent to jail on judicial remand.

He pleaded with the court for grant of bail.

However, the NAB prosecutor opposed the plea, saying that the accused was involved in embezzlement and bureau had solid evidence against him.

The bench after hearing detailed arguments granted post arrest bail to Rai Ejaz and directed for submission of surety bonds of Rs 500,000.

Rai Ejaz was arrested by the bureau from Karachi where he was serving as SSP.

Meanwhile, the bench also dismissed pre-arrest bail petition of SP Muhammad Riaz in the same case.
