Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after being shown footage of his late father during a TV interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo was shown an unseen clip of his father Jose Dinis Aveiro, an alcoholic who died of liver failure at the age of 52.
Ronaldo was just 20 when his father died of liver failure, and the Portugal and Juventus superstar couldn’t suppress his emotion as he explained how his dad didn’t live to see his historic achievements in sports.
Promotional clips for the interview, which were shared by the ‘Good Morning Britain’ Twitter account, show the Portuguese soccer star breaking down after being shown a video of his late father. Ronaldo was seen wiping away tears, saying, “I never saw the video. Sorry”.
Asked by Morgan what it was that made him so upset, Ronaldo replied, “To be the number one and he doesn't see anything. He doesn't see me receive awards.” Morgan then adds, “He never saw how great you became”.
“Never,” Ronaldo responds. “My family see, my mum, my brothers, even my old son, but my father, he didn't see nothing, and it was... he died young,” he said.
Ronaldo also thanked Morgan on Tuesday for 'most revealing interviews' he has ever done.
Probably one of the most revealing interviews I ever did...! Thanks @piersmorgan for the interview.👍🏽 pic.twitter.com/4fWfU3ifxj
