Prices of essential kitchen items witnessed an increasing trend during this week past as compared to previous week, a survey conducted by Business Recorder revealed here on Saturday.
The survey observed that onions price remained unchanged at Rs 400 per 5kg which were being sold at Rs 90-95 per kg in the retail market; tomatoes price went up from Rs 275 to Rs 325 per 5kg which were being sold at Rs 80-85 against Rs 65-70 per kg and potatoes' price remained unchanged at Rs 220 per 5kg which were being sold at Rs 50-55 per kg.
Garlic price remained stable at Rs 850 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 250 per kg and Chinese garlic was beings sold at Rs 900 per 5kg which was available at Rs 275 per kg in the retail market. Ginger price went up from Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,700 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 400 against Rs 325 per kg. Lemon price remained stable at Rs 400 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 100 per kg in the retail market.
Egg price went up from Rs 116 to Rs 115 per dozen which was being sold at Rs 130 against Rs 125 per dozen in the retail market, chicken price remained stable at Rs 5,700 which was being sold at Rs 160 per kg in the retail market while chicken meat was being sold at Rs 260 against Rs 280 per kg.
Maroo kaddu price went down from Rs 500 to Rs 350 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 80-90 against Rs 125-140 per kg in the retail market, prices of various qualities of pumpkin went up from Rs 300-350 to per 5kg to Rs 325-375 per 5 kg which were being sold in the range of Rs 80-95 against Rs 70-90 per kg.
Radish price remained stable at Rs 200 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 50 per kg in the retail market; Chinese carrot price went up from Rs 225 to Rs 280 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 75 against Rs 65 per kg in the retail market, and yam price went up from Rs 375 to Rs 400 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 95 against Rs 80-90 per kg in the retail market.
Peas price remained unchanged at Rs 1,200 per 5kg which were being sold at Rs 250 per kg in the retail market, beans price went up from Rs 400 to Rs 475 per 5kg which were being sold at Rs 140 against Rs 110 per kg in the retail market, various qualities of tinda prices went up from Rs 500-600 to Rs 550-750 per 5kg which were being sold in the range of Rs 120-170 against Rs 110-125 per kg in the retail market; and brinjal price went down from Rs 300 to Rs 250 per 5kg which were being sold at Rs 60 against Rs 80 per kg in the retail market. Turnip price remained unchanged at Rs 300 per 5 kg which in the retail market was being sold at Rs 75-80 per kg.
Capsicum price went down from Rs 800 to Rs 450 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 100 against Rs 180-200 per kg; cucumber went up from Rs 250 to Rs 275 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 75 against Rs 65 per kg; cauliflower price further went up from Rs 330 to Rs 350 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 90 against Rs 80-85 per kg; cabbage price went up from Rs 200 to Rs 225 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 55 against Rs 50 per kg; and green zucchini (tori) price went up Rs 375 to Rs 400 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 100 against Rs 95 per kg in the retail market.
Okra price went down from Rs 250 to Rs 200 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 55 against Rs 65-70 per kg; and kareela price went down from Rs 500 to Rs 375 per 5kg which was being sold at Rs 95 against Rs 140 per kg.
People from different walks of life talking to this correspondent expressed serious concern over the skyrocketing prices of essential kitchen items. They said that as a result of the present government's policies, they are unable to purchase even simple vegetables, saying in past common people were not thinking of eating mutton, beef, chicken, fish and other expensive edibles but now they even can't afford vegetables like cabbage, turnip and carrot which are being sold in the range of Rs 60-125 per kg.
The people said that a person having Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000 monthly salary hardly manages daily two times meals let aside educating his children and paying utility bills.
Overall fruit prices also witnessed an increasing trend as golden apple was being sold at Rs 160 against Rs 150 per kg, Gaja apple was available at Rs 130 against Rs 120 per kg, Ambri apple at Rs 125 against Rs 115 per kg, white apple at Rs 90 against Rs 80 per kg, Pakistani Kals Kolo apple at Rs 160 against Rs 150 per kg and Iranian apple was available at Rs 175 against Rs 160 per kg. Good quality local banana was being sold at Rs 70 against Rs 90 per dozen while normal quality banana was being sold in the range of Rs 40-55 against Rs 50-65 per dozen, and guava was available at Rs 100 per kg.
Freshly-arrived various brands of oranges were being sold at Rs 150-220 per dozen, grapes were being sold in the range of Rs 100-225 per kg, sweet orange were available at Rs 150-225 per dozen, and pomegranates were being sold in the range of Rs 150-225 against Rs 140-160 per kg.
