Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) on Friday has shifted one of its departments - Department of Environmental Sciences - to the Education City located in Malir, becoming the first public university to establish its campus in the newly established Education City. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony at Malir Campus, Sindh Chief Secretary Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah said the SMIU has achieved a milestone with establishing its first campus in the Education City. "Sindh government will soon complete the required infrastructure in the entire area," he assured.

"It is a right approach to establish an environmental science department in this area," Shah said. "The students and teachers will have an ideal situation to practically observe the changing environmental conditions," he maintained. Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah said the Education City project was one of the best projects of the government of Sindh. He said it was not an easy task to establish the campus within limited resources but, he added, the SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh has worked hard to make one of the oldest dreams to come true.

Sharing the details of project, SMIU VC Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh said there was a solid reason to shift SMIU's department to its newly established campus. "We want to give an opportunity and ideal situation to our students and teachers to see how our environment is changing," he added. "We want to establish an environment friendly campus before we move more departments here." He said that all the students of SMIU will plant trees and look after them as their own property.

He told that a new road will be constructed to directly connect the SMIU campus with the Superhighway. "It will facilitate students and teachers to easily move to the city." He said that the situation around the Education City will be different after 10 years. "We have started our journey today."

"SMIU is alma mater of Quaid-e-Azam," Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh said. "The building in the city campus is of great importance and of national significance." He said SMIU has produced number of prominent figures of the country and will continue to serve the nation.

New academic blocks, hostels for girls and boys, residential blocks for the staff, and sports complex are under construction at the Malir Campus. Total 9,000 acres of land has been allocated to at least 21 universities in the Education City. SMIU VC also visited the Department of Environmental Sciences and was briefed about the master plan of Malir Campus. SMIU teachers, students officials and local residents also attended the inaugural ceremony.
