  • He stepped down from his post to represent govt in army chief extension case in Supreme Court.
  • The SC allowed army chief to stay for six months.

Farogh Naseem, who resigned from his post two days ago to represent Army Chief General Qamar Bajwa before the Supreme Court (SC) in a case regarding an extension in his tenure, was sworn in again as the Law Minister on Friday.

The ceremony was held in Presidential House, where Naseem was administered oath by President Arif Alvi. The minister stepped down from his post on Tuesday after the SC suspended the extension in the army chief's tenure. Following the verdict of the top court, Naseem resigned to fight the case in the SC with the attorney general of Pakistan.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar said that Naseem voluntarily resigned from his office because he could not represent the government while serving as a federal minister. Akbar had maintained that after the case, Naseem could return to the cabinet on prime minister's approval.

On Thursday, a three-member bench headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa allowed the government to extend the army chief's tenure for six months.
