President Arif Alvi app-ointed Khalid Jawed Khan as Attorney General for Pakistan with the rank and status of federal minister. A notification in this regard was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on Saturday, which said; "In exercise of power conferred under Article 100(1) of Constitution the president is pleased to appoint Khalid Jawed Khan as Attorney General for Pakistan with the rank and status of federal minister with immediate effect."
Barrister Khalid Jawed has replaced Anwar Mansoor, who resigned on Thursday, as the Supreme Court had directed him to place material on basis of which he made "unwarranted" statement against the members of the bench or to tender a written apology.
Barrister Khalid Jawed has served as attorney general during the caretaker government, headed by former Justice Nasirul Mulk from June 21, 2018 to August 31, 2018.
He resigned as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government wanted to appoint Anwar Masoor as the AGP. Khalid Jawed has also served as an Advocate General for Sindh.
He actively participated in the 2007 lawyers' movement for the restoration of the judiciary in the country and wrote many articles against the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) of military dictator General Pervez Musharraf (Retd).
Barrister Khan's professional career spans over more than two decades.
He was enrolled as a high court advocate in 1991 and became an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2004.
He served as a legal adviser to the AGP in 1995-1996. His father, Prof ND Khan, is a seasoned politician, who had been associated with the Pakistan People's Party for a long time.
Barrister Khalid is an expert in vast areas of law, including constitutional law, income tax, sales tax, customs, land matters, banking law, and service laws. He obtained his LLB from London University, BCL (bachelor of civil law) degree from Oxford University, LLM from Harvard University, and completed his bar-at-law from Lincoln's Inn.
