Major enforcement actions have been carried out by the Inland Revenue Enforcement Network (IREN) Hyderabad, and Regional Tax Office (RTO) Peshawar, against non-duty paid cigarettes, preventing huge loss of revenue. The IREN Hyderabad on Tuesday launched a major crackdown against illicit cigarettes and seized huge quantity of low quality and non-duty paid cigarettes.

According to the details of the operations conducted by the agency, the IREN seized 271 cartons carrying 2.7 million fake and non-duty paid cigarettes. The estimated amount of federal excise duty and sales tax comes to around Rs 57.5 million on these seized cigarettes.

The IREN has also coordinated with the Regional Tax Office (RTO) Peshawar for conducting enforcement exercise against illicit trade of cigarettes. The agency has also warned the transporters and traders, to avoid trading/storage of illicit cigarettes or they would not be spared, and strict action would be taken against them.

Another major action was also been taken by Peshawar tax authorities as the FBR braces for strict and speedy action against the trade of illicit cigarettes. As per orders by Commissioner Regional Tax Peshawar, Corporate Zone Tariq Jamal and under the supervision of commissioner Inland Revenue Muhammad Tariq, the Special Surveillance squad, and Nowshehra and Chamkani Police carried out a joint operation and confiscated 1.5 million illegal counterfeit cigarettes worth Rs 47 million.

According to the sources, the Special Surveillance squad of the FBR, during regular checking, seized a car bearing registration number LOT-1801, which was transporting illegal counterfeit cigarettes to Punjab. Officials have confiscated counterfeit cigarettes, which were moved to the Tax Office Peshawar.

Tariq Jamal has expressed his utmost conviction to promote the business of legal cigarettes, and has said that strict and severe action against the people involved in the business, manufacturing and transportation of illegal cigarettes will be ensured.
