A massive fire broke out at the 11th floor of a business centre on the I I Chundrigar Road here on Tuesday morning, however no loss of life was reported.
Following the incident, rescue teams were rushed to the site. Four fire tenders and a snorkel took part in the operation and doused the fire within an hour.
Cause of fire and the consequent loss of property were unknown till filing of report. Karachi Water and Sewerage Board imposed an emergency at water hydrants in NIPA and Safoora.
Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar reached at the site to review the rescue operation. Talking to the media, mayor expressed concerns over the increasing fire incidents on high rise buildings in Karachi, Akhtar said the fire brigade does not have capability to extinguish fire erupt over 11th floor.
Wasim said he has been approaching all forums to equip fire brigade with all necessary latest technology for three and half a year but the federal government didn't provide them fire tenders and other equipments.
Mayor told that no casualty was reported due to timely efforts of experienced firemen. He said the firefighters didn't find it difficult to reach the 11th floor with the help of snorkel and rapid extinguish work was done.
The Mayor also hailed the firemen and said they are doing excellent job despite having limited resources. To a question, he said there are no proper residencies for families of firefighters as their residential units are in very dilapidated condition. "I have written many letters to federal and Sindh governments and asked them to repair residencies of fire brigade employees but to no avail. However the federal government had promised to give fire tenders and modern equipment," he added.
The mayor said Karachi is revenue engine of Pakistan and resources collected from the city are not being spent on its uplift.
Meanwhile, the mayor also reviewed road carpeting work at Sindhi Hotel, New Karachi, which was developed by Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan MNA Hafiz Osama Qadri from his funds. Akhtar said the road was dire need of the people who had been facing hardships. He also expressed gratitude to MNA for utilizing his funds for 'right' reason. The Mayor also met the locals and was apprised of issues of the area.
Speaking on the occasion, Hafiz Osama Qadri said major role of parliamentarians is to legislate for welfare of the people, suggesting that elected local government representatives should be assigned to do uplift works.
