Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar on Tuesday said that he had informed the Sugar Inquiry Commission about the decisions taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). Talking to media persons outside the Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA's) headquarters after appearing before the Sugar Inquiry Commission headed by Director General (DG) FIA Wajid Zia, the minister said the commission had asked questions regarding the ECC decisions.

Umar was the finance minister when the ECC approved the export of this commodity.

"I was first given the chance to present my stance on the matter and then the commission asked questions," he added.

Umar said that the commission's report would be finalised soon and would be made public.

"I do not think that Prime Minister Imran Khan needs to appear before the commission," he said, while responding to a question. Umar said that everything would be made clear in the next few days and everyone would know the difference between Imran Khan and others.

He said the commission's report had yet to come so it could not be said that to which country sugar was smuggled and in what quantity.

However, Umar said he role of the Sugar Advisory Board could not be ignored.

Umar had himself requested the commission to summon him instead of the prime minister after the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) senior vice president and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi demanded the commission to question the prime minister and the finance minister about why the federal cabinet and the ECC had approved the export of sugar when there were not surplus stocks in the country.
