olympic spyKARACHI: The arena is set and the athletes are primed as the countdown to the much-anticipated London 2012 Olympic reaches its finale with Friday’s opening ceremony.

The three-hour extravaganza will be viewed by a global TV audience of over a billion people.
Organizers have released a video clip to give a peek to Oscar-winner Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony.

As per program, Europe’s largest bell will ring inside the Olympic stadium at 1:00 am (PST) at the start of the event, featuring a cast of 10,000 volunteers, said to give a quirky sight to the British life.

The event is said to be using 15,000 square meters of staging and 12,956 props along with a million-Watt Public Address (PA) system using more than 500 speakers.

The crowd would comprise about 80,000 spectators including the Queen and other members of the Royal family and a host of other dignitaries and celebrities from across the world.

The Olympic flame is being taken down the Thames on the Queen’s row-barge ‘Gloriana’ on the final leg of its 70-day journey.

The 22-year old British basketball player Amber Charles, who played a significant role in London’s winning bid, will be the final torch bearer.

The torch relay will end late in the evening with the lighting of cauldron during the opening ceremony. The person to carry the torch into the Olympic Stadium and light the cauldron is still a mystery.

Later, the Queen and Prince Philip will host a reception at Buckingham Palace for heads of state and an opening ceremony concert featuring Snow Patrol, Paolo Nutini, Stereophonics, and Duran Duran will be held in Hyde Park.

With all these colorful celebrations, the sporting action which began on Wednesday with women’s football competition, will continue with archery at Lord’s cricket ground.

Pakistan Television (PTV) Sports and Star Sports will broadcast the whole event live which starts at 2:00 am (PST).
