KARACHI: News of the “alleged corruption which centres around a taped conversation” has spread in several media outlets locally and internationally after Sri Lanka Cricket issued a press released on Sunday to this effect.
Sri-Lanka Cricket issued a press release on Sunday stating that the controversial taped conversation had been submitted to the ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit for further investigation.
The controversial tape claims that a team owner of the SLPL was scheming to fix games in the tournament. A meeting was held between the tournament organizers, Somerset Entertainment Ventures (SEV)and the owners of the concerned franchise.
However the league’s organizers claims that the alleged incident of corruption in Sri Lanka, revolving around a taped conversation, occurred before the SLPL started and will not affect its integrity.
Sandiip Bhammer, CEO of SEV the league’s promoters, said “The allegations were made and the anti-corruption people alerted prior to the tournament launching, so if anything, the anti-corruption will be even more vigilant during the tournament,” he said. “They are just allegations at this point. Nothing has been confirmed.”
Sri Lankan newspapers are yet to report on the leaked tape or the allegations.
The anti-corruption measures for the SLPL are identical to those implemented for international matches. Two members of the anti-corruption unit will be in Sri Lanka for the duration of the tournament. They are the same officers who oversaw Sri Lanka's ODI series against India and the Pakistan tour in June.
