ISLAMABAD: The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based monthly inflation on national level has eased down to 8.2 percent on year-on-year (YoY) basis in May 2020 from 8.5 percent in April 2020, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said. The PBS CPI-related data released here on Monday said that the national CPI in May 2019 was recorded at 8.4 percent, adding that on month-on-month (MoM) basis, it has witnessed an increase of 0.3 percent in May 2020, an over 0.8 percent reduction in April and an increase of 0.6 percent in May 2019.

The Urban CPI inflation increased by 7.3 percent on YoY basis in May 2020 as compared to an increase of 7.7 percent in previous month and 8.5 percent in May 2019. On MoM basis, Urban CPI increased by 0.3 percent in May 2020 as compared to a decrease of 0.7 percent in the previous month, and an increase of 0.7 percent in May 2019.

The CPI inflation rural, increased by 9.7 percent on YoY basis in May 2020 as compared to an increase of 9.8 percent in the previous month and 8.3 percent in May 2019.

On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.3 percent in May 2020 as compared to a decrease of 1.1 percent in the previous month, and an increase of 0.5 percent in May 2019.

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation on YoY increased by 11.0 percent in May 2020 as compared to an increase of 9.3 percent a month earlier and an increase of 9.9 percent in May 2019.

On MoM basis, the SPI increased by 2.2 percent in May 2020 as compared to a decrease of 1.8 percent a month earlier, and an increase of 0.6 percent in May 2019.

Wholesales Price Index (WPI)-based inflation on YoY basis increased by 1.5 percent in May 2020 as compared to an increase of 4.9 percent a month earlier, and an increase of 16.5 percent in May 2019.

The WPI inflation on MoM basis decreased by 2.1 percent in May 2020 as compared to a decrease of 2.0 percent a month earlier, and an increase of 1.2 percent against May 2019.

Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy Urban CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 6.3 percent on annual basis in May 2020 against an increase of 6.4 percent in April, and 7.2 percent in May 2019.

On monthly basis it increased by 0.4 percent in May 2020 against an increase of 0.2 percent in April, and an increase of 0.5 percent in May 2019.

Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy Rural CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 8.4 percent on YoY basis in May 2020 against an increase of 8.5 percent in April and 6.8 percent in May 2019.

On MoM basis it increased by 0.4 percent in May 2020 against an increase of 0.3 percent in April, and an increase of 0.4 percent in May 2019. Core inflation, measured by 20 percent weighted trimmed mean Urban CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 6.7 percent on yearly basis in May 2020 against 6.7 percent increase in April and by 7.3 increase in May 2019.

On monthly basis it increased by 0.4 percent in May 2020 against a reduction of 0.2 percent in April and an increase of 0.5 percent in May 2019. Core inflation, measured by 20 percent weighted trimmed mean Rural CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 8.9 percent on YoY basis in May 2020 as compared to 9.3 percent in April and by 7.2 percent in May 2019.

On MoM basis it increased by 0.5 percent in May 2020 as compared to a decrease of 0.6 percent in the previous month and an increase of 0.5 percent in corresponding month of last year i.e. May 2019.

On MoM basis, prices of following food items increased: chicken 41.46 percent, potatoes 31.19 percent, fruits 9.72 percent, milk 4.63 percent, condiments and spices 3.71 percent and butter 2.58 percent.

On MoM basis, prices of following food items decreased: onions 23.35 percent, vegetables 19.62 percent, eggs 18.74 percent, tomatoes 7.74 percent, pulse gram 7.25 percent, pulse masoor 4.43 percent, besan 4.38 percent, and wheat 3.37 percent.

On MoM basis, prices of following non-food items increased: cotton cloth 4.04 percent, tailoring 2.53 percent, motor vehicle accessories 1.51 percent, and construction input items 0.38 percent.

On MoM basis, prices of following non-food items witnessed a decline: motor fuel 13.43 percent and liquified hydrocarbons 4.12 percent.

On YoY basis, prices of following food items increased: potatoes 96.94 percent, pulse moong 83.21 percent, maash 56.73 percent, masoor 40.86 percent, butter 37.41 percent, beans 30.54 percent, gur 25.65 percent, vegetable ghee 25.42 percent, condiments and spices 24.67 percent, besan 21.17 percent, cooking oil 20.74 percent, gram 20.17 percent, sugar 20.12 percent, eggs 19.64 percent, and mustard oil 15.94 percent.

On YoY basis, prices of following food items decreased: tomatoes 39.49 percent, onions 21.17 percent, vegetables 4.07 percent, and fruits 3.6 percent.

On YoY basis, prices of following non-food items increased: gas charges 54.84 percent, personal effects n.e.c. 23.07 percent, water supply 19.56 percent, and construction input items 17.86 percent.

While prices of motor fuel registered a reduction of 19.52 percent, and Liquified Hydrocarbons prices declined by 2.13 percent.

On MoM basis, prices the following commodities on account of WPI witnessed an increase: poultry 39.74 percent, potatoes 33.51 percent, fruits 13.21 percent, milk 9.65 percent, spices 7.68 percent, steel bar and sheets 4.09 percent, leather 2.22 percent, meat 2.04 percent, and rice 1.68 percent.

On MoM basis, prices the following commodities on account of WPI witnessed a reduction: kerosene oil 38.75 percent, furnace oil 26.67 percent, diesel oil 24.98 percent, vegetables 24.75 percent, eggs 19.77 percent, and motor spirit 16.15 percent.

On YoY basis, prices of the following commodities on account of WPI witnessed an increase: potatoes 132.09 percent, natural gas 29.28 percent, bed foam 26.61 percent, pulses 25 percent, cotton seeds 24.1 percent, vegetable ghee 23.86 percent, chocolate 22.64 percent, footwear 21.71 percent, medicines 18.96 percent, motor vehicles 18.79 percent, sugar 18.79 percent, and eggs 17.61 percent.

On YoY basis, prices of the following commodities on account of WPI witnessed a reduction: furnace oil 51.94 percent, kerosene oil 50.97 percent, diesel oil 41.16 percent, motor spirit 25.79 percent, and vegetables 16.96 percent.
