KARACHI: Army has been deployed to protect the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) staff, as it will begin voters’ verification drive in the largest city of the country, the media reported on Wednesday.
Army personnel will be deployed along with Rangers, Frontier Constabulary and police in the city from Wednesday until the verification process in five districts of Karachi is completed.
According to Secretary ECP, Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan, the process of verification is likely to be completed in 18 days.
The media further stated that, deployment of army in sensitive areas began earlier on Wednesday.
Electoral lists contained 6.92 million voters of the city, which includes 59,111 entries of potential voters who were issued CNICs between September and December last year. These voters would be enrolled after verification by the ECP.
The list has been reprinted and thumb prints will be captured and verified by the verifying officer. Signature of verifying officials will also be recorded to ensure transparency of the process.
It may also be pertinent to mention that the Supreme Court has approved the review petition of Muttahida Qoumi Movement (MQM) due to some reservations over the delimitation process in Karachi.
