Pakistan regrets India's negative response to PM Imran Khan's offer to help

  • PM offered to share Pakistan's cash transfer program with India to cope with coronavirus.

Pakistan regretted on Friday India's negative response to Prime Minister Imran Khan's offer to help India cope with coronavirus.

On Thursday, PM quoted a study which found that 34% of households across India will not be able to survive for more than a week without assistance. The PM said he was ready to help India and share Pakistan's cash transfer program which is lauded internationally for its transparency.

However, India rejected his offer saying India has a stimulus package as 'large as Pakistan's annual GDP'.

In a press release issued today, the Foreign Office regretted the statement made by Indian Ministry of External Affairs' spokesperson and said it reflected 'an unprofessional attempt at point-scoring over a serious issue that involves lives of millions of poor people in the sub-continent, worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic'.

The statement further said that the PM's offer was in consonance with the initiative for sharing national experiences among SAARC member countries in dealing with the impact of Covid-19.

"If that intent was serious, then the MEA’s response to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s suggestion is inconsistent with the stated position of their own leadership," FO said.
