ISLAMABAD: Prof Dr Francis Lamand, Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, on Monday called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr.
The President congratulated him on being conferred the award of Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in recognition of his services to the country.
Spokesperson to the President Senator Farhatullah Babar said that Prof. Dr. Francis Lamand is a professor of Philosophy, an international lawyer and a former diplomat who has worked extensively on Islam and whose pioneering work on Allama Iqbal is widely regarded as instrumental in promoting greater understanding between the East and the West.
He said that during meeting with Dr. Lamand the President recalled his earlier meeting with Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in 1994 during which he had proposed the establishment of an "Iqbal Chair" in one of the universities in Paris.
The President also appreciated the proposal saying that such an initiative would help promote greater understanding between the people of Pakistan and France and further strength the ties between the two countries.
The President also appreciated the role of his organization "Islam and the west" which he said was doing a commendable job facilitating communication and understanding between the two communities.
The President said that promoting understanding between East & West was the need of the hour especially at a time extremist tendencies and mindset was threatening international peace and security.
Dr. Francis Lamand thanked the President and the Government of Pakistan for the Award conferred upon him and assured his continued efforts to promote greater understanding between the people of different faiths.
