MEXICO CITY: Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto will head to China and Japan this week in a bid to deepen the Latin American nation's foothold in the Asia-Pacific region, the Senate announced Tuesday.
Pena Nieto, who will travel between April 4 and 10, will seek in China to "position Mexico as an open and reliable partner to attract investment and encourage trade," the Senate said in a statement.
The visit to China will also help "forge alliances to have a greater participation in the Chinese and Hong Kong markets," it said.
Pena Nieto will also attend the Boao Forum for Asia on the Chinese island of Hainan, a focal point for regional economic talks.
In Japan, the president, who took office in December, plans to carry out a "strategy to position Mexico within the Asia-Pacific region" and "strengthen bilateral relations in the economic and political sphere."
