The sixth Indian Premiere League opened to great applause yesterday as cross-cultural performances stormed the stage, showcasing prominent figures from the world of politics to that of Bollywood and music.
Reportedly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started the event with a radiant smile. Shahrukh Khan took over the podium to recite Rabindranath Tagore's unforgettable and immortal poem, "Where the mind is without fear..." while classical dancers flooded onto the forefront, animating his words.
Next up was a foreign team of cheerleaders who, we hear, transformed the stage into a flurry of color and activity as much with their vibrant costumes, pom poms and stilts as they did with their mind-boggling stunts, acrobatics and cartwheels.
Cricket grabbed the spotlight for a fleeting moment when a gymnast in a flowing white gown doing graceful somersaults handed the shining golden IPL trophy to Captain Gautam Gambhir of last year’s winners Kolkata Knight Riders, who placed it on the dais. Allegedly, former Indian cricket captain Ravi Shastri then led the captains of the nine teams in the ICC cricket pledge.
Indian sources reveal Deepika Padukone stunned the audience in her dazzling black tights and top, grooving to the beat of her most upbeat numbers, including the Punjabi song “Angreji Beat.”
Bollywood glam-queen Katrina Kaif was carried onto the stage on a carriage drawn by extras. Reportedly dressed in a deceptively well-covered golden robe, she danced to everyone’s all-time favorite item songs including “Sheila Ki Jawani” and “Chikni Chameli” soon losing the gown to reveal gorgeous red pants and a fancy black and silver blouse underneath.
Then came the much-awaited King Khan, duly thanking the organizers, the IPL chief Rajiv Shukla and even the audience. Allegedly looking as charming as usual in leather trousers, black vest and a matching jacket, he effortlessly stirred the crowd dancing to his most popular numbers such as “Chammak Challo.”
Indian singers Usha Uthup and Bollywood music director Bappi Lahiri reportedly proceeded Pitbull, who finally took the stage to deafening applause, immediately singing up a storm to five of his most smashing hits, like “Hey Baby,” and quite aptly, we must add, “ International Love." The rapping superstar was joined by SRK, Katrina and Deepika in a roundup for the finale, allegedly leaving the audience breathless with exhilaration.
