UNITED NATIONS: The head of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has congratulated Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his assumption of office, with a pledge of the world body's development network's continued support to Pakistan.
"This historic transition from one democratically elected civilian government to another represents an important consolidation of democracy in Pakistan," UNDP Administrator Helen Clark said in a letter to the Pakistani leader.
Noting that Pakistan faces complex development challenges, Clark, a former New Zealand prime minister, said, "The new government's focus on sustainable growth and development will be very important in addressing those challenges.
"The UN development system has supported the people and institutions of Pakistan for over six decades. Our work is driven by national and provincial government’s priorities and based on agreement with the Government of Pakistan," she added.
"I can assure you of the continued commitment of UNDP to working closely with you and your government in support of Pakistan's national development goals and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals," the eight targets agreed by world leaders in 2000 to improve people's lives around the world.
