CAIRO: The Arab League has denounced the use of force against protesters in Arab countries and urged the governments of such states to rapidly implement promised reforms.
"The people are demanding liberty and democracy," a spokesman for the 22-member group said in a statement received by AFP on Tuesday.
"These are demands that need support, not the use of bullets against those making the demands," the spokesman said in response to crackdowns on pro-democracy demonstrations.
"What happened in Tunisia and Egypt and what is now happening in Syria, Libya, Yemen and other Arab nations is an indication that a new era led by a young generation is seeking a better future.
"The League is following developments in several Arab states with concern, as these events demonstrate the will of the people for reform," the spokesman added.
He said talks were under way on holding an extraordinary meeting of the group's ministerial council on May 8 on "this dangerous situation, so the crisis between people and those who govern them can be examined."
The League had already postponed a heads of state summit scheduled for Baghdad on May 11 because of the wave of unrest sweeping through several Arab nations.
