imageSIALKOT: Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that the government is making efforts on war-footing to minimize electricity load shedding in the country.

Addressing a reception hosted in his honor by Markazi Anjuman-e-Tajran, he said the government has paid Rs 322 billion circular debt to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to reduce the duration of electricity load shedding.

"We can reduce three-hour load shedding if traders stop their business activities at 7.30 pm across the country," he said.

The minister said the government was contemplating various options for generating electricity from coal, hydel and wind.

Khawaja Asif said the government was try to provide maximum relief to masses during the fast approaching holy month of Ramzan by reducing load shedding duration in the country.

"We have been facing energy crisis for the last 15 years and the government was making strenuous efforts for bringing the country out of electricity crisis," he added.

He was confident that electricity situation will improve after the increase of water level in dams. The government will protect the rights of poor people and continue to provide subsidy to them, he said. He assured that development work in Sialkot would be further accelerated to facilitate the people.

Earlier, President Markazi Anjuman-e-Taran Ghulam Mujtaba Mahr and Secretary Ehsan-ul-Haq highlighted the problems of the traders.

Raizuddin Sheikh and Khawaja Muhammad Mansha Ullah Butt also spoke on the occasion.
