LA PAZ: At least 15 people were killed early Friday at a prison in eastern Bolivia as clashes between rival gangs ended in a huge fire, police said.
"We regret that there are approximately 15 people who have lost their lives," police commander Jorge Aracena said after the incident in a prison in the eastern city of Santa Cruz.
Aracena said authorities had brought the situation under control.
He said an undetermined number of injured were being taken to hospitals in Santa Cruz.
He said the incident began early Friday when a group of inmates broke into another sector of the prison, setting a huge fire fueled by exploding propane gas tanks.
