ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of International Chamber of Peace and Conciliation (ICPC), Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl, has described the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif's speech at the UN as a timely reminder to the international community about its continued indifference towards the decades old Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK).
Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl in a statement issued in London said that the Nawaz Sharif had rightly implored that despite the UN mechanisms and the UN resolutions, the pain of the people of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir was being ignored and no serious effort was being made to address this festering sore of South Asia, KMS reported.
"One of the important realities that cannot be ignored is that self- determination is the important pillar of the UN charter and Kashmiris have so far been denied the opportunity to choose their political future according to their aspirations. A belief in any democratic order will remain hollow if pluralism, tolerance and broadmindedness are selectively applied to different situations," he said.
Professor Shawl welcomed the Pak-India summit and hoped that the political leadership of the two countries would make every effort to melt the freeze and make a positive beginning to address the IoK dispute not only in the interest of the people of Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir but also in the wider interest of the people of South Asia. "A positive, sustained and determined dialogue is the need of the hour. The dialogue can become result-oriented if it is made inclusive by including Kashmiris' authentic leadership," he added.
