According to Indian media reports Bollywood actors Aamir Khan and John Abraham have opposed Supreme Court’s verdict that states same-gender consensual sex is a crime. They feel the verdict pushes their society back to medieval era.
"India has harboured archaic prejudices once again... The Supreme Court has criminalized homosexuality... Shame," John Abraham tweeted.
Aamir feels court is depriving people of their basic rights.
"I am more disappointed with this judgment. It feels very intolerant and violative of basic human rights. It's a shame," the ‘Talaash’ actor posted on facebook.
Apart from the two many other actors including Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Neha Dhupia and Riteish Deshmukh took to twitter to express their shock over the court’s decision.
‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ actress Richa Chadda said it’s a gloomy day as court has victimized love again.
“The Supreme Court criminalises love, again. Sad day,” Chadda tweeted.
‘Total Siyappa’ actor Anupem Kher felt its disappointing that despite being in a modern era we don’t believe in equality.
“We obviously don't believe in equal rights even in the times when we send Mangalayan to Mars” Kher said.
‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ actress Kalki Koechlin believes court has no right to decide what is culturally acceptable.
“Supreme Court's job is to uphold the right and freedom of every individual, not to decide what is culturally acceptable or not. In this case they failed,” Koechlin said.
However, as the celebrities slammed the court’s judgment, Megastar Amitabh Bachchan remained ambiguous on the subject and posted on his blog: “And then there is a huge debate and discussion on the latest Supreme Court judgement on homosexuality !! Some very strong views being expressed, hurt anger and disbelief by some, applause and commendation by others.”
