imageISLAMABAD: A four-day workshop on "Healthy Vegetable Seedling Production" started here Monday with an aim to promote healthy seed production and nursery raising business to benefit the small farmers.

The workshop has been organized by Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) in collaboration with United State Agency for International Development (USAID), The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and AVRDC, the World Vegetable Center.

"PARC in collaboration with national and international development partners has been working on healthy vegetable seed production technology and nursery raising business for the benefit of small farmers and vegetable growers of the country," Member Plant Sciences Division of PARC, Dr. Shahid Masood said while inaugurating the four-day training workshop at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) here.

Masood said that under this program scientists will train progressive farmers and vegetable growers of Potohar region on importance and production of healthy vegetable seed, establishment of nursery raising business, tunnel farming, classification of vegetables, role of improved genetic material and other aspects of vegetable production to promote vegetable cultivation on modern line in the country.

On this occasion, Dr. Khalid Naeem Khajawa, Deputy Director General NARC, Representative of AVRDC, Dr. Mansab Ali, Senior Director Horticulture Research Institute, Dr. Khalid Qureshi and other senior scientists also addressed the participants of the training course and highlighted various methods and techniques for vegetable production.

The participants of the course also visited NARC field area of vegetable for practical demonstration, site selection, basic structures and requirement and general introduction of the program.
