ISLAMABAD: Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights and Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervaiz Rashid said on Tuesday effective steps were being taken to counter terror bids.
Talking to media persons here, he said training and capacity-building of the law enforcement agencies were need of the hour.
Pervaiz Rashid said 50 bomb disposal vehicles were being imported as part of measures to foil terror attacks. Five vehicles had already arrived in the country, while the remaining 45 would be delivered within few months, he added.
"Our bomb disposal squads do not have proper equipment as they have to wear WAPDA helmets while defusing the bombs."
He rejected the impression that police were not fulfilling their responsibilities regarding maintenance of law and order. The security forces and police had saved precious lives on several occasions by taking timely actions, he added.
The minister said the policeman, who was martyred during terrorist attack on Islamabad district courts, was not on duty.
He fought bravely with the attackers and lost his life.
He said the police were not trained in counter-terrorism, rather they were trained for dealing with ordinary criminals and not hard-core terrorists.
The pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government, he said, inherited the 14-year old problems. No steps were taken by the previous government for the capacity building of police.
Replying to a question, the Information Minister said the federal government was not hindering holding of local bodies elections. Even dates for holding local government elections were announced by the provinces, but due to some legal issues and court directives the same had to be postponed, he added.
